Wednesday, May 25. 2011 How do you like me title? I was lamenting to Josh about my lack of creativeness when it comes to coming up with one and he said that he never has that problem. So I told him to come up with a title and I’d use it. There ya go. I am slowly working my way back into running, but I’m not happy about how few miles I’m able to manage. I suppose I should feel glad that I’m able to run at all, but still. Annoying. The good news is that this Friday, I have an appointment at the UW Health Runner’s Clinic in Madison, WI. I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much because, frankly, I’ve pretty much heard loads of professional (sports MD, podiatrist, physical therapist) and non-professional (running store schmos) opinions about my stride/gait/body mechanics and they’ve all been wrong. But, all the same, helping runners run is what these folks do, so maybe I’ll allow myself a little eep of hope. If nothing else, it’ll be a fun time in Madison. We used Priceline to score a crazy good deal on a hotel right downtown and within walking distance from Capitol Square and all sorts of restaurants, shops, bars and museums. How good of a deal did we get, you ask? Well, we’re paying $44/night for a room that normally goes for around $180. I love Priceline. It actually felt like it might be officially Spring here in da Yoop on Sunday. Sunny and warm, but not hot. Slightly breezy. Perfect. I decided to brush the dust of the old MTB since the road bike has been seeing all the action this year. I was going to head up to the MTU trails, but I had watched a movie about wood ticks & Lyme disease the night before and I was convinced that I’d come home covered in them, so I decided to bike out to Chassell and back on the trail instead. My trip out was uneventful, aside from coming nose to nose with a skunk. I was riding down the trail, he was running up the trail, I stopped and hoped he’d jump into the bushes and he didn’t stop until he was about five feet from me. My initial thought was that if I stayed completely still, he wouldn’t see me. When he saw me and arched his back and tail, my next thought was that my co-workers were really going to hate me when I came in all skunky on Monday. You know, up close, skunks are kinda cute. They have teeny little black noses, tiny ears and floofy tails. This one must have been relatively young, because he looked to be quite healthy with his shiny black coat and he was seriously moving when he was heading up the trail. Anyway, he decided that I posed no threat to him and he waddled off into the bushes and off to his next adventure. Remember my rant about shitty little dogs? Well, on my way back, about halfway between Chassell and Houghton, I got chased by one. I’ve encountered many dogs on my runs/walks/bike rides and most of them are all bark and no bite. Usually I end up saying hello to them and they come over to get petted and head on their way, or just ignore me once I get past their driveway. I’ve never had one actually chase me and attempt to bite me before until Sunday. I’m talking snarling, snapping, barking and lunging at my legs. The guy owner was screaming at me to stop “HE DOESN’T BITE!!!!!! JUST STOP!!! STOP!!!!!!!” (interspersed with multiple curse words) but when I unclipped and tried to put my right leg down, the dog lunged at it and I actually felt it’s breath on my ankle, so no way in hell was I putting my foot down. That’d be like giving it a unwrapped Christmas present. So, I figured that since it wanted my leg for lunch, I’d put my shoe in it’s face and it’d bite that and then it might realize my shoe wasn’t all that tasty and that would be the end. I did that and the owner FREAKED OUT and started yelling about how I was going to kick his dog in the face. By this time, I had slowed down enough so that the lady owner was able to grab the little beast. I stopped and exchanged some choice words at the guy owner. Very choice. BUT! I did not swear. Well, I think I might have used “hell” as in “Hell yes, I was going to kick your dog in the face!” but that’s used so frequently nowadays that I don’t really think it’s even considered a swear word anymore. Anyway, I told story this to a few people at work and they said I should have called the cops because, really, that dog is dangerous. Also, it was off the leash and I was one of about a million people using the trail at that time. If it wasn’t me the dog was chasing, it could have very easily been a little kid. I’m sure I’ll be on the trail multiple times this summer, and you’d better believe that if I have another run-in with this same dog and it’s irresponsible owners, I’ll be calling the PoPo. Se ya’ll after the weekend. Thursday, May 12. 2011 We’re back! We made it home late Saturday night after two l-o-n-g days on the road. We brought back Josh’s new boat, so this summer should be full of boating fun. At least that’s what Josh tells me as I’m not much of a boating person. Of course, we had to stop at Boating Mecca on the way back. And then we saw this nasty accident going through the mountains just North of Chattanooga. Sorry about the blurry photo, that was an over-the-shoulder-backwards shot. That big yellow rig is the tow truck, the tractor and the driver were gone when we came through. Wonder what happened. I can’t remember where this was, but it was a Baymont Inn before the tornadoes came through. I had my camera poised to take many of these photos since there were everywhere the last time we were ‘down South’, but I finally saw a set in mid-Illinois. Truck balls. Classy! The obligatory Kill me now, I’ve been in this car for the last 19 hours and I have 6 more to go shot. After that, I pretty much degraded to taking pictures of baby cows running through the field … .. and reflections of the road in the shiny truck ahead of us. And then we were home. The End. Running – I went for two short runs last week. My Garmin died about 30 seconds into my first run, so I have no exact distance or time, but I guessed that the first run was about 1.5-2.0 miles and the second was 2.0-2.5 miles. My legs were super stiff and tight on the first run, but I suspect that’s because they were stuffed into the front seat of a truck for the previous 23 hours. They felt much better on the second run, and I didn’t have any post-run shin pain for either of them. I suspect it’s because I did half of each run on gravel and kept them short. Yesterday, I did just over three miles and my right shin started to ache slightly just as I was finishing and it’s been just a tiny bit achy today, too. I’ll go for a short run tomorrow, maybe on the Chassell gravel trail and see how it feels. If I do okay, then I’m seriously considering heading down the Eagle River to do the 5k event at Journey’s Marathon this weekend. I really, really wanted to do the half this year, and I probably could, but chances are it would end with bad consequences. Dang it, anyway. I’ve been kicking around the idea of getting evaluated at the UW Health Runner’s Clinic in Madison, WI for a few months now, and I finally went ahead and contacted them for an appointment. I’m hoping that they’ll be able to give me a definitive answer about what the heck is wrong with my legs and why I keep getting injured. It’s one of those places where you send them your contact info and then they contact you to schedule your appointment, so I’ve yet to hear from them. Who knows, they might tell me they have a six-month waiting list or something. I hope not, I’ve really hoping to be able to do either a half or full marathon this fall. Has anybody gone to or heard anything about the Runner’s Clinic in Madison? Let me know! Sunday, April 24. 2011 OK, I lied. It’s week 9, but I didn’t know that when I wrote the title. Then I decided that I should stop being lazy and figure it out, so there you go, week 9. The schedule for week 9 called for five miles on Tuesday, four on Thursday and eleven on Saturday. I was able to do the five (9:57 pace) on Tuesday and that’s it. My right lower leg is giving me some serious trouble. I’ve got pain in the back, from the heel to the calf and then on the inside, right in the soleus region. I’ve been stretching, icing, ibuprofening, rolling, massaging, strengthening, trigger pointing, taping, compression sleeving and just about anything else that I read about on the Source of All Self-Diagnosis (aka the internet), but I’m not having much luck. I went back to my PT guy on Thursday for some myofascial release and he found that my right hip was a bit tipped forward (toward the ground) resulting in my right leg being a tad longer than my left. He surmised that because of this, my right leg was taking a considerable beating when I was running and that was probably causing the majority of my troubles. He worked for quite a while on my hip, quads and calves and everything felt pretty loose and happy when I left. He did warn me that I might feel sore the next day, and I didn’t really believe him (myofascial release therapy isn’t exactly like deep tissue massage or any massage, for that matter), but the next day I certainly was sore. Doh. I have a bunch of stretches to add to my exiting 40 minute stretch routine and a re-evaluation next Wednesday. Hopefully my hip will stay where it’s supposed to be and everything else will settle back down. Anyway, it was kind of a bad training week for me. I ran on Tuesday, skipped my XT on Wednesday, then skipped my run/XT on Thursday for PT and dinner with friends. I was really itching to go running on Saturday, but common sense prevailed and I decided to ride the trainer instead. An ninety minutes and four episodes of “Roseanne” later (episodes are around 23 minutes, no commercials on Netflix!), I’d ridden 35 miles. Here’s me pretending to look all serious trainer ridery while watching Nancy (Sandra Bernhardt) tell Arnie (Tom Arnold) that she likes the ladies. Please excuse my messy house and no, I don’t have aerobars, think I should get some? I think I’d probably kill myself if I tried to use them on the road, but I think I decided they’re a must for long trainer rides. We spent the rest of the weekend finally getting paint on the walls of the spare bedroom that was gutted & dry walled this fall. I’m turning it into a workout room so I chose a cheery yellow color because I thought it would put me in a good mood when I was sweating away. Trouble is, it was like three months ago when I selected the color and I must have been in a really good mood because it’s not just yellow, it’s YELLOW. I sincerely hope it grows on me. Finally, we watched “The King’s Speech” on Amazon on Demand last night. After all the hype and critical acclaim this movie got, I was expecting it to be really good. I thought the story was interesting, especially so because it was true, and the acting was really good, but it just didn’t hold my interest and I found it to be quite the snooze. Sorry movie fans, this one gets a thumbs down from me. Next week, I’m supposed to do 3, 4, and 12 mile runs. I’ll attempt the 3 miler and see how it goes from there. |
